Kodak Composition Program

Hyper focal distance information from Kodak...
As a general rule, approximately 1/3 of the depth of field is in front of the point of
sharpest focus with 2/3 of the depth of field behind. As a result,
you should focus on a distance 1/3 of the way from the nearest
object you want sharp to the farthest. For example, for objects
within a 5 to 20 foot range, you should focus on 10 feet and use
the smallest lens opening that you can. This rule does not apply to
very close subjects or to those at great distances from the
                      camera, including those at infinity.

Infrared - updated 12-10-2007

Infrared techniques are really popular.  There are several ways you can create infrared-type images in b/w.

1) have your dSLR spare camera body converted over to permanent infrared by the manufacturer.
2) shoot with an infrared filter over your lens.
3) use faux infrared techniques in Elements or CS.  Here is a CS video tutorial on how to do this
http://www.radiantvista.com/video_tutorials/
4) use any of the many free, or low cost, filters or actions in CS to create automatic infrared.
5) lots of good info on which IR filters do what:

Frequently Asked Questions and Answers if you didn't find what you need above....

Q.  I need information to help make a decision on whether to use free or low cost software for editing.

A.  Check out the info on my software page.  Everything we discussed is here.  I recommend ACDSee Photo Manager 10 for organizing, viewing, comparing, e-mailing, slide shows, printing, Sendpix, file re-naming, format changes, resizing, and web page creation.  Adobe Photoshop Elements version 6 is the best editing software to start with.  The trial version is available click.
http://paws.flcc.edu/~adamsja/digital/software.html

Q.  What 4x6" printer do you recommend?

A.  Epson's PM-290.  The unit prints and also burns CD's or DVD's of your photos directly from your memory card (or you can hook it up directly to your computer).

Q.
Are there reliable books, magazines, or .pdf files you can recommend on digital photography?

A. Magazines I recommend:  also, search for "magazine" and add these names in your favorite search engine

A.
Digital Photography Review's really helpful web site (by Phil Askey) also let's you do side by side comparisons of just about very camera.

Q.  I need information about editing digital photos.  Where do I start?

A.

Adobe makes the very popular Photoshop Elements software - here's a Popular Photography review

ACDSystem's web site has lots of good articles here:
http://www.acdsee.com/newsletters/index

I recommend using a practical, feature-loaded software application called Adobe Photoshop Elements (version 6.0 is current).  Elements allows the user to work within one of 3 interfaces - a Quick Fix mode that is very well designed, a Guided mode and a Detail mode that provides all the features and tools.

I offer a 7 week Digital Editing course twice a year that is very thorough.
