  • Cover Letter discussing your experience with the assignment

Tuesday, September 18th

Class Overview
  • For writing Practice, we wrote with our non-dominant hand and then wrote metaphors to describe the experience.
  • We work-shopped Peg and Kyles essay as a group. We focused our feedback on 3 things 1. What phrases grab our attention, 2. What we wanted to hear more about and 3. What was the central theme lurking in the paper.

Homework
  • Read Chapter 5 in the text on 'Voice'.
  • Read the Handout by Lisa Ling available here: Lisa Ling Blog Writing.doc and focus free write on it looking at what his her 1)Style and 2)Voice
  • Be prepared to workshop your first essay in class on Thursday.

Thursday, September 14th

Class Overview:

  • We discussed chapter 1.
  • We analyzed the difference between 'Factual Truth' and 'Personal Truth' based on the Quote by Leigh Hunt on Page 2.
  • We shared our Homework (ex. 4, pg 17) by each of us reading one of the definitions.
  • We wrote a 'personal' definition for the word 'discipline'.

Homework:

  • Read chapter 3 of Writing True and annotate the text with notes.
  • Write Exercise 3 on page 16. Part D should be typed (double spaced) and will be collected. The paper should be about 2-3 pages.

Class Overview:
  • We discussed chapter 2 by first free-writing from a single quote in the chapter and reflecting on our weekend writing tasks.
  • We each read both are in class free-write as well as one selection from the homework.
  • We played Online Balderdash

Balderdash answers:

  • Groak: to watch people eat hoping that they will offer you some of their food.
  • Impecunious: having no cash or money.
  • Tapinophobia: a fear of small things.

Homework:

  • Read chapter one of Writing True and annotate the text with notes.
  • Write Exercises 4 on page 17. Do two of these one public to be read on Thursday and one private
