Prerequisites: Although no other courses are required, the judo student should be in reasonably good condition--that is no major injuries like broken bones. The student will be expected to do exercises like push-ups, sit-ups, and rolls on a mat.
Course Objectives:
-Acquire more strength, flexibility, and endurance
-Gain knowledge of how a judo competition is carried out
-Be able to conduct yourself in other dojos
-Learn how to fall, do warm-up exercises, and judo drills
-Be able to do 2 or more hold down techniques
-Be able to do at least 3 judo throws
Course Requirements:
-Long, loose clothes (like a sweat suit and a light jacket) should be worn
-For your safety:
1. always do warm up exercises
2. remove all jewelry before class (earrings, watches, bracelets, etc.)
3. wear glasses at your own discretion
4. work out in bare feet
5. If you have any special needs tell instructor after class
Method of Evaluation:
-Grades are based on attendance and participation. Participation in this course
means doing exercises such as warm ups (push-ups, sit-ups, stretching), cool
downs, fit-ins for throws, falls and rolls, mat crawls, throwing, watching
while quietly listening to demonstrations.
-Attendance is taken by each person signing a sheet for attendance, either
before or after each class.
-Just watching for the whole class does not count; the instructor will suggest
modifications of the activities in case of minor injuries or illness
-Repeated lateness or the leaving class early may affect your grade. When the
total time missed is an hour or more, an absence will be recorded.
-Some classes can be made up in various ways, so please do not drop the course if you are sick for a week or two. Usually students make up
classes by participating in a different class taught or staying late one or more times. There are usually 2-3 sections of judo taught each semester.
It is the students’ responsibility to arrange for class make-up and
to obtain a note from the other instructor if a class has been made up. Remember
to make up classes as promptly as possible, for there is a limit to how many
classes a person can make up with only a week or two to go in the semester.
- Specific lists of judo vocabulary and techniques are attached. A test of
this material will be given only if someone desires to earn a yellow or orange
belt. A judo uniform is required to take the test.
-Grades are earned according to the following guideline:
A ---------perfect attendance with considerable effort shown
B ---------missing 1-2 classes
C ---------missing 3 classes
D ---------missing 4 classes
F ---------missing 5 or more classes
