Walls/ Cliffs

Wall with strata.

Some strata or layers are very thin, others are thicker.  In the cliff below, some of the layers seem to be rather thick while others are thin.

The light colored parallel features are sand dunes.  Sand dunes are very common on Mars.  Mars has had billions of years to produce sand.  Much of the sand on the Earth has found its way into our vast oceans.  Eventually, our ocean floor moves inside the Earth and melts.  This occurs in regions called subdution zones.

The picture below includes a giant cliff that does not show layers.  The picture is about 2 miles wide, so the cliff must really be tall.  It may very well be higher than any straight cliff on Earth.
